MCAT Preparation: When and For How Long?

For students with a traditional science background who have completed the required premedical coursework, the most common questions are: When should I start studying for the MCAT? How much time will this require?
As a general rule, plan to study for either:
About 3 months if studying full time (30 hours per week), or
About 6 months if studying part time (15 hours per week) while balancing school, work, or extracurricular activities.
Ideally, your MCAT should be completed before you begin working on your medical school application. Taking the exam early gives you time to receive your score, finalize your school list, and focus on preparing a strong application rather than juggling MCAT preparation and application writing simultaneously. It also leaves room to retake the exam if necessary without delaying your application.
Before creating a study schedule, we strongly recommend taking a full-length diagnostic exam under realistic testing conditions. While your first score is simply a starting point, it provides valuable insight into your strengths and weaknesses and helps determine how much preparation you'll need to reach your target score.
Once you have a baseline, build a study plan that includes three key components:
Content review to strengthen foundational knowledge.
Practice questions to apply concepts and identify patterns in your mistakes.
Full-length practice exams to build testing endurance and track your progress.
As your test date approaches, spend less time learning new material and more time reviewing your practice exams. Carefully analyzing why you missed questions is one of the most effective ways to improve your score.
The MCAT is a marathon, not a sprint. Starting early, following a structured study plan, and completing the exam before your application season begins will help you approach the application process with confidence and allow you to focus on presenting the strongest possible application.
