The simple answer is that it depends on the individual programs. The complex answer
is also that it depends on the individual programs. In other words, you must choose your
programs before you can start planning your application(s). Many programs use a
centralized application service, PostbacCAS, but many use their own applications. Let’s
start with the former for a broad date-range overview.
PostbacCAS Timeline
PostbacCAS opens in early August, so the 2026 August date (TBD) reflects those who
wish to start a program in summer or fall of 2027. Ideally, prior to August, give yourself
4-8 weeks to prepare your application. This preparation will include, at a minimum,
choosing your programs and researching their due dates, entering your transcripts
manually, finalizing your resume/CV, and writing a personal statement. Once you enter
programs into the CAS, each one’s supplemental questions and/or essays will populate.
Give yourself an additional 2 weeks to write these.
Aim to submit your application in the fall, particularly for schools that have rolling
admissions. Be mindful that it may take up to 10 business days for PostbacCAS to
verify your application before it is transmitted to your programs.
Once your application is in the hands of your programs, the waiting begins. Most
programs use rolling admissions or state specific dates when they review applications.
Following your application review, you will receive notice of your status, which could be
an invitation for an interview, a hold, or a rejection. Many programs continue to offer
virtual interviews, with some having the option for hybrid, and a few requiring in-person
interviews.
School-Specific Application Timeline
Many respected and successful postbacc programs use their own applications, with
deadlines posted on their websites. For programs that offer fall, spring, or summer
admission, you will have several options for choosing the deadline that works best for
you.
Since you will most likely apply to PostbacCAS and one or more programs that have
their own applications, it’s wise to start with the centralized application first, simply
because it opens early and covers all essential components.
